I used to go across the river once in a while to make anchors in Cecil
Parnell's shop when he was alive. When we ran out of coal from the
(long since closed) Sydney underground mines, he jumped in a 10 yard
dump and went tearing off to get coal from the (then recently opened)
open pit mine near New Glasgow. He was soooo proud of the speed with
which he'd topped up his supply and especially of the good price he
got.

And it was exactly as you describe. Get a good heat on a couple of
pieces of 1-1/2" round, then rake a big spongy mass of clinker out of
the fire and start over. Pits. (pun intended)
