Blind pins - drill holes in tang, fit a side - mark the holes. Glue 
other side in place.  Drill rivet size holes in the wood - DO NOT go 
all the way thru. Make short pins, pointy on both ends, short enough 
so that ~ 40% of the length extends above the tang when you shove 
them in the holes. Drill the other side on the marks - just that 40% 
or so. You may need to use a slightly larger bit that the pins (say 
0.125 pins, then a #30 bit). A touch deeper than needed is better 
than too short. Smear glue over the side and pins and press into 
place.  As an example of what it looks like see:
