Don,
Yes, they still have the ram's head fireplace sets for sale ($450)
Probably to keep down the theft, if nothing else :-)
I believe the original project was somewhat controversial, and I can
only imagine what it would be like today. But that could be a lesson in
what this kind of project could mean to future generations. It would
certainly be better than some of the token projects being done today.
(Please don't use this to start a political debate on this list)
Watching the 20 minute newsreel about the project, I learned that a lot
of the craftspeople were not necessarily skilled in the detail of their
work. For example, carpenters were taught to carve the telephone posts
they used for newel posts. I assume that some of that held true for the
iron work as well.
From what I understand, that generally the WPA tried to rotate workers
in and out of the camps to distribute the work among the large number of
out of work tradesmen. However, for the Timberline project, they kept
them on longer because of the complexity of the job and their aggressive
schedule.
Anyway, it was well worth my time. I went there expecting to spend about
an hour looking around. I was there for 3 hrs, although I had lunch
there (amazing bowl of clam chowder...)
On another topic, I can't explain why my previous post was sent twice;
and I'll apologize for the formatting. I got a new iPod and tried
sending from that.
