Before you give up on 3 phase motors take a look here.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Motortronics-ME2-203-M-3HP-AC-Variable-Frequency-Drive_W0QQitemZ250487435696QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3a5236f1b0
it is a long url, but it points to the same
VFD that I purchased about 4 months ago. It runs up to a 3 HP motor, has
soft start, over speed capability and motor protection. It can be used
with a external pot to manually adjust the speed between your pre-sets.
It can also power more than one piece of equipment by using it to wire
three phase into your shop or just plugging different pieces of
equipment into it. It works as advertised. I couldn't have purchased a
new 3 HP single phase motor for the price of this, and I use it to power
other 3 phase equipment.
