You can get away with a lot of variation in pressure adjustment if the  
piece you're cutting is ground clean.
One thing that really surprised me until I thought about it is how  
important it is to grind the BACK side of the path of the cut- it seems  
like the mill scale and rust reflects the flame and keeps the kerf from  
going through cleanly.
I started out thinking that since they just cut whatever at the junkyard  
with no prep that must be how the big kids do it- now I grind the cut  
clean on both sides almost every time. Only takes a minute, and then you  
get a sweet cut.
Try going along a straightedge clamped to the piece, too (I use angle  
iron) - you'll really impress yourself!
