Actually, you've probably seen many fossil coal stoves ntended for cooking,
Many if not Most of the old cast iron kitchen stoves you see are wood and
coal fired. They had geared rotating fuel grates, in a small firebox,
usually at the left side of the stove body. The exhaust is conducted
around the oven and under to stove top. The oven interiors certainly are
separated from the fuel/smoke/ exhaust stream. You could expose the bottom
of a pot directly to the flame by removing the round insert in the stove
top, and many pots were made to fit in the recess left by removing these
plates. None of these stoves were bubble tight, but the draft from a proper
chimney was plenty of negative pressure to keep most smoke/fumes out of the
room.
