[TheForge] coal stoves

James,

We have one of these old combination stoves out in the barn, not in use. On
the left side it has a fire box like a normal wood burning cook stove. On
the right it has gas burners. My guess is that they used wood or coal in the
winter when they needed the extra heat for the house, and then in the summer
they cooked with gas to keep the house as cool as possible.

Someone mentioned cooking with charcoal in one of the last series of
mails. I have seen coal stoves, the kitchen of the Cornelius Vanderbilt
home in Newport RI has 3 stove/ovens, coal, wood and gas, but have no
idea how they are used. I presume the food has to be isolated from the
food, unlike gas or wood. Does anyone have any idea or experience? I'm
not planning on using one, just curious.
James
