I have found that on some types of rock, a hammer drill is useless.
I am no geologist, and cant tell which is which, but I know that there  
are common garden stones out there that are hard as woodpecker lips,  
and that a hammer drill with a carbide bit just bounces right off.
But water cooled, slow rpm diamond bits will chew thru most anything.
And most rental yards will rent you one pretty cheap- they look like a  
handtruck, and you hook up a garden hose.
The bits aint cheap though.

diamond core bit.
Rent a drill, the kind with hose hookup for constant water coolant,
and use a diamond core drill.

Granite can be VERY hard.
