[TheForge] Cap and trade

Hey Bob,

Just curious... What kind of charcoal were you using?

I switched to exclusively using home made charcoal about 8 years ago after
using 'Grove Charcoal' for a couple of years. Grove is a local to Wisconsin
hardwood charcoal. Admittedly charcoal does spark a bit more that coal
(especially when you get to the bottom of the bag or barrel) but I really
haven't seem a whole lot of popping... perhaps the kind you used was
somewhat damp?

I've also found that charcoal is a bit more 'neighbor friendly' when I've
been doing demos... if you have clothing or food merchants near by they
appreciate the charcoal smell over that of coal. Plus if you get hungry at
an all day demo you can always bring along a grill & cook yourself some
goodies right over your fire! [big grin]

About induction furnaces... I've always been fascinated by the thought of
those... but I do agree once you start doing bends it would get hard to
use... I can see using one for getting the twists into square stick prior
to doing the final bends. Will those get metal hot enough to forge weld
billets for knives and other blades?

Wes

Roger,

The problem I see with the induction heaters is that once you start forging,

the part may not fit back between the coils. You only get one shot at
getting it right once you start bending things. They would be great for
things like sharpening jack hammer bits or making fence pickets.

I have very little experience with charcoal, it was ok but I didn't like
the popping and the sparks. It may not have been a fair test since I was
demonstrating outside and it was kind of windy.

I have been using charcoal for quite some time and am planning to buy an
induction heater for the smaller items 1" and down
Will still need the charcoal for things that will not fit in the coils.

Ries,

I think I'll give up blacksmithing before I have to use an induction forge.
I would build a charcoal furnace first.
