In watching the anvil shoot, I did notice that the shooter did not have a very safe anvil for shooting. His bottom anvil has a square hole in the base - not completely square, but squarish. The anvils Tim Ryan shoots are wallowed out to cereal bowl sized holes. With this modification, the likelyhood of a stress riser developing and blowing off a section of anvil is reduced. 

Tim also puts up an oak and steel barrier between the crowd and the anvil. The crowd is kept in the cone 'shadow' formed by the barrier, back away from the shooting anvil.
