Geoff,
The US is big, and availability of used equipment varies a bit from
place to place. If you're landing on the Eastern Seaboard, anywhere
from Boston, MA, to Washington, DC, you will probably have no problem
finding all the equipment you want. Near major cities west of their,
such as Chicago, Pittsburgh, etc., the same holds true. If you want
equipment that would have been used on a farm, the entire midwest and
the south probably have all that you need, though distances can be
large.
It's when you move to the west or southwest, or the remoter rural
areas that I understand that used equipment may be hard to find. And
there are many exceptions.
To see this for yourself, try looking up the equipment you want on
ebay.com - and see where it's being sold from - or on craigslist.org
for the area in question.
As for new equipment, it's available everywhere, the only issue is
shipping cost.
