Easiest is to buy spring swages from Grant.
He makes several different vine and bark textured single sided
texturing tools and double sided spring swages.
Kaynes sell them at www.blacksmithsdepot.com
You can make your own swages, of course.
Take two blocks of steel, weld a u shaped handle on them, heat in
forge, and hammer em onto a positive of what you want.
The positive only needs be a couple inches long, and you can carve
your bark texture in it hot, with chisels, or cold, with a grinder
with a cut disc in it.
These tools can certainly be used without a power hammer, once made or
purchased. Its more work, of course, and it helps to make some kind of
holddown to hold the tooling, so you can use your hands to hold a
hammer and to spin the round bar as you forge the texture in.

Can anyone give me some direction on forging steel rods with that finish
that makes it look like it's a tree branch? Is it usually done with a
mig as
texture? I dont' have an air hammer to punch it in sadly.
