[TheForge] air compressor problem

Hey
does anyone have a trouble shooting guide for compressors?
I have a sears 5.5 hp upright with cast iron cyl.
It won't make pressure. Not sure it is something with the compressor it 
'self
It started out last year it would make pressure but when the compressor 
stopped there would be this leak.
not In the hose or supply side. I think it has something to do with a check 
valve that maybe keeps the pressure in the system in the tank from back 
feeding to the compressor or cylinders.
Does this sound reasonable or am I going down the wrong road?
