Dave,
Brings us back to teaching blacksmithing. Often a student will ask "Why not 
this way?" so to keep from stifling curiosity, I have often said "try it" 
knowing it wouldn't work that particular way, but hoping it would open up a 
new path."  This is A way of doing it, not THE way.  "Because we have been 
doing it this way for 40 years." will not fly anymore.
