The key, in my opinion, is to know the natural forms, then to take
artistic license with them. Even approximated natural forms have
considerably more eye appeal than amateurish attempts.
I give you Eric Cuper's work, for example:

Now compare the first above image to the following one:

Granted that this latter image has a simple humorous appeal, but I
feel it pales compared to Eric's work.
