[TheForge] Drilling Marble - OT?

While perusing the Machinery's Handbook, 12th Ed., 1943, p. 1398 I
came across this note:
The drilling of marble and similar materials, esp. when the drill is
fed by hand, is greately facilitated by grinding or filing [sic.?] a
narrow slot in the point of the dril, as shown..."
It gives more details, but since many of you will have this book, I'll
stop there.
This was news to me, but I've never attempted to drill any stone.
Thought it might be of some use to those of you installing railings, etc.
