Bruce,  Check your lathe -- for 95 % of work on centers you can still use a 
chuck. With a small center inside the chuck you can drive the work with the 
chuck jaws.  What you have to be very careful of is not pushing the work off 
center as you tighten the chuck.  You can use an indicator to make sure you 
don't do this.  For really critical center to center work then a lathe dog 
is better -- but for this you better have first class centers. Usually 
blacksmiths are not trying to hold something to ten-thousands.  For most 
critical work you will have more trouble with the tail stock and turning 
very fine tapers than anything else.
