i totally agree.
several years ago i was on a one man crusade to bring back the use of
'may' in place of 'can' as in 'may i have a piece of candy?'
as in 'may i have a cup of coffee?' instead of 'can i have a piece of
candy?' and 'can i have a cup of coffee?'

this reminds me of a family moment many decades ago.
my children were still in grammar school. the two oldest children were
with me one saturday morning helping me run errands. we stopped at the
old farm & fleet store and picked up several rolls of 'duck tape'.
while i was pulling out of the parking place the middle child, asked
with her serious voice. "what part of the duck do they use to make duck
tape?" i had to put the car in park i was laughing so hard. i felt so
bad for laughing at her question which was asked in all seriousness.
it has become a tradition between her and i that on her birthday i give
her a roll of 'duck' tape.
