If I were trying to bring power hammers to a third world enviroment, I'd 
be more tempted by this make do approach than Clay Spencers design. I 
like Clays design better, but I wonder how available those little spare 
tires are back in the sticks down there. Up here they are junk yard 
salvage. Our scrap yards tend toward being target rich though.

The Appalachian hammers are more concept/philosophy than a design. The 
final form comes from the materials at hand. This is much more practical 
in areas long on ingenuity and manpower, while short on resources.
