8 rings is fine for this time. As a tradition the rational becomes a bit 
much if someone from say Alaska or Hawaii is being commemorated.

If we wish to promote such things I like the three ring rational better, 
end of the day and all that. The symbolism just works better, and we 
need not rework the idea when someone from Germany, or Japan is the honoree.

On a side note I have thought at various times starting with Bill Pieh's 
funeral that it would have been appropriate for each smith present to 
have rung an anvil at the wake.
