Thanks for all the input.  Its not bottoming out.  The hole goes all the way 
thru and does the same thing from both sides.   I'm guessing its about 30 
years old, no markings at all.  Not a valuable piece, just a nice little 
plane.  10 - 24 too small.  I guess I'll try lowes on my next day off and 
see if a small metric screw fits, and if it doesn't try a 10 - 32 tap on the 
hole.  Or come to think of it I may be able to try a small metric tap and 
see if it fits.
