DC or 3 phase w/a inverter...but that is more $$..Motors are cheap but the inverter is $$, but I would say at the HP you want the inverter shouldn't be too $.

Subject: [TheForge] OT - Variable-speed motor & controller
I have an application for a variable speed motor. 1/6 HP would
probably do, but I might go up to 1/2 HP.
I need continuous speed control across some reasonable range. I will
be using a pulley drive, so I can always vary pulley sizes to get the
range I need.
I am not conversant with speed control on motors. What would be an
appropriate type of motor and controller to use for such a purpose?
I'm watching my penneys so will favor lower cost.
Any advice would be appreciated.
