Haven't tried duracoat yet.
There is a product called Flitz (www.flitz.com) and they make a
gun/knife polish, among other things. I bought a quart of the paste
polish several years ago. Like all things it requires elbow grease but
does work well. My wife said it was too aggressive to be used on silver
plated objects. I haven't tried it on ironwork probably would be ok for
that.
Their gun/knife stuff might work well on ironwork, if it is as good as
what they say. Has anybody tried it or anything else they make?
I've been using pure beeswax on indoor work, heated the metal with a
rosebud torch till hot enough to burn the wax and then kept applying wax
till the piece cooled enough that the wax would no longer melt... apply,
wipe/ reapply, wipe, etc. etc. Gives a matte black finish which is
pleasing, depending up on the application, client, etc. finish is a tad
sticky for a week or 2, then the stick goes away. Dang messy process!
I did a rebar staircase railing this way, about 40 linear ft of railing,
side panels, etc. plus a super structure under the wooden staircase from
6 and 8" by 3/8" plate to add support as the carpenter's design was
letting the steps flex as much as 1/4" when stepped on (the only support
was in the center of the semi-spiral staircase). I stopped the flexing
of the steps and the supporting structure dramatically improved the
looks of the client's loft apt.
