	Agreed.

	I might point out that there are two aspects to this discussion - the 
codes themselves and their administration.  Even a good thing can be 
applied in bad ways.  I have no problems with codes per se, though it 
would not surprise be if some codes were adopted under conditions of 
conflicting interest.  The biggest problems I've seen lie in the 
politics of the local governments.  NJ is hideously corrupt in this 
regard.  Places like Howell township are rife with crooks on the city 
councils and dishonest building inspectors.  Those are the places where 
I see good things being used to thwart liberties and extort monies from 
people who just to build a god damned garage.
