Unfortunately, as I found out when I first proposed my rather unusual  
home, building departments have to stick to a "one size fits all" policy.  
Having to cater to the big guns of the building trade is another handicap,  
as is covering their asses with their bosses and potential legal issues.
Without the personal blessing and guidance of a architectural heavy hitter  
on my side I'd have given up and built a box with 1' eaves and most likely  
been perfectly happy anyway.
