Andrew:  Your reaction is entirely correct....killing should be a somber
act.  The big problem nowadays is that folks are too far removed from their
food production to be grateful for a natural order that provides it.  The
vegan and the profligate meat eater are two sides of the same coin...those
people who see themselves as outside the natural order.  These modes of
thought can only exist where there is industrial plentitude and neither are
hungry.

Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food" is a good read.

What an interesting world we live in!
