Standard test of passenger engines is that it has to ingest a 20 or 25#
frozen bird without disrupting operation, or at least it was years ago.
I've seen the high speed footage of such tests. It appears almost
unreal to see the fan slicing the frozen bird into perfect segments.
I've seen similar tests using a 1" bolt dropped into the fan from above.
If it remains outboard and passes through the bypass duct, the engine
can continue to function. Inboard is a very different story, however,
as it gets into the actual power unit.
