The sheriff isn't the one you need to worry about. What is your local
prosecutor like? Being "in the hills" guarantees you nothing. The
Summers county prosecutor is smart and sane and nobody to worry about on
the whole. The prosecutor in Beckley, OTOH, is a liberal whore who will
throw your ass into jail in a heartbeat. I always have to be very
conscious of my gun when I'm there because the cops have an attitude and
there is a city ordinance against open carry. If it is visible even in
part, they will cart your ass to jail and charge you, even though the
state law recognizes the right to openly carry without a permit. Even if
you win in court, you will be tens of thousands of dollars in debt and
you won't even get a kiss at the end of it all.
If your prosecutor is some politically motivated prick, watch out -
especially if they are against ideas such as defense of one's own life.
Ridiculous as it may seem, there are those who seem to truly believe
that one has no right to defend themselves against death and injury, the
implication being that one is obliged to consent to death at the hand
and whim of anyone so deciding.
