Sure it would though taping wouldn't be practical.
Using a webcam and a few gig of memory and record 24/7.
Set it up to automatically overwrite if you don't tell
it to save, that way if the mailbox is toast when you
get up or home you have the recording. Say 24hrs worth
of memory so you have time to check your mail.
Make arrangements with the neighbors to come save or
even just turn the computer off if the mailbox is
smashed and you're gone for a few days. I'll bet they'd
be happy to help catch the vandals. homeowners don't
usually like vandals very much.
Folks are doing exactly that right now. Heck, they're
having to LoJack baby Jesus figures in nativity scenes!
