Does ordinary lacquer stand up to UV from the sun? I don't know.
I've used a special purpose lacquer on an outdoor iron (unrusted) sign:

I added an organic corrosion inhibitor (Irgacor 153?). I suspect Permalac
comes with something like it now, but I don't know.
The sign has been up ~15 years with no sign of any rust. This is on the
side of a brick wall in Loveland, Colorado, which has a pretty dry
climate.
