I like the piece-of-tire plus swing-away idea. Tire is kinda hard to
work with, what with high-carbon belting and tringle.  Another
possibility would be some kind of commercial fishing buoy, gunwale
bumper or the like.  I think I've seen things like that that might be
just about the right size for a mailbox and they're made out of
moderately stiff but flexible, totally indestructible plastic or
rubber.  Some of the buoys come in dayglo colors.

Time for a holiday weekend at the shore and some shopping along the
commercial wharves?
