That is impressive.  We get spoiled around here with our wells.  Water table 
is pretty uniformly sea level, and the highest point on the Cape is only 300 
feet above that.  Most of it is less than 50 feet.  And no bedrock.  We're 
just a big sandbar sitting out on the continental shelf.   Lots of wells get 
driven with a sledge hammer or homemade Briggs & Stratton powered pile 
driver.  Commercial well rigs look like pickup-monted post hole augers with 
a few extra lengths of auger.  No drill bits.  Worst thing that happens is a 
little clay.

But is 15 F right now, and cheesy copper is bursting all over, if that's any 
consolation.
