Peter is right about this....tempering gives a strength increase in flexion,
but edge compression is a sure way to shatter your glass. Vibration can
also lead to disaster.

You can't crack tempered glass. You can only shatter it. One tap on the
edge can set it off. One slip of the grinder will do the same. I would call
your local glass installer. someone who does a lot of sliding doors, for
instance, before attempting to grind it.
