Mark,
Are you wanting a "compound" bend in the strips or only a flat piece bent to
the curvature of the globe?
If you can accept the flat bend then I would make a bending jig from a large
section of pipe, the diameter of your desired globe. Many junk yards have
sections of large pipe and you could get them to burn off a junk that you
could make a bending jig from. Then you use bending forks to bend you 1/8
steel to the form. After you have lots of these, you weld them together at
the north and south pole.
If you want compound curves it is harder.
