Bruce:  I would guess that it is calcium carbonate.  I prefer to flux with
anhydrous borax, or better yet, the 1/3 sureweld, 1/3 anti borax and 1/3
anhydrous borax mixture favored by Robb Gunter.  I have found that if the
flux puffs up and falls off, it is not forming a barrier.  The fluffing up
is caused by the moisture in the borax boiling off.
