Check out Popular Mechanics online article about starting to blacksmith:

They build a forge out of a sink, plumbing parts, and a shop vac, but they
go out and buy a 275 lb Penddinghaus anvil, commercial tongs, and 200 lbs of
boxed coal coal from Pennsylvania.  
Anyway, it's an interesting article and positive towards blacksmithing.
