[TheForge] A36 vs 1018

I've done forge welding with A36, pure iron, 1018 which around here is cold-rolled, and other stuff. Rarely do I have problems provided my mental attitude is correct. Whenever a fire burns hollow, I've had problems - I get too much oxide. Use borax, Jon Nedbor's "Black Magic" flux or commercial stuff from a variety of places. (or no flux at all). Practice helps. Ask Bob Patrick in Arkansas for advice. Test weld with a small piece of stock. Relax! and tap the pieces together. Practice some more.

Around here unless you want to get tool steel you have two choices, hot
rolled A36 or cold rolled A36.

I ask for hot rolled because it is cheeper and I'm going to heat it up any
way.  About half the time they send cold rolled because that is all they
have in stock.

As far as welding goes, I figure that I might as well figure out how to weld
A36 because that is what I have to deal with. It's mostly in the temp, if
the steel is clean and the right temp it will weld, even A36. 10 years ago I
took a Bob Patrick welding class and it changed my life. I just take it for
granted that most of my welds will be good.  Before the class maybe half if
I was lucky.
