Terry and all --
Maybe a bit heavy -- but the heat shield behind my large wood stove
is cement board (stuff with mesh embedded in a concrete matrix -
found at Home Depot & Lowes). We screwed 1.5x0.75" strips to the
cypress walls behind the stove, then screwed the concrete board to
the strips, leaving an inch clearance at the bottom to allow air to
flow behind the shield. Stove is ~ 12" away from the concrete
surface. Floor is wood with a shallow wood box under the stove -
bottom layer, more concrete board, top layer of tile. A heat probe
behind the shield when the stove is heating shows a bare rise over
ambient. Tain't steel but it works, looks good and doesn't rust.
