It's pure romanticism to assume that the body of men who, as ordinary  
citizens, responded to emergencies by showing up with their own weapons in  
the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries was very different from  
those available today.
Sure, there's a lot of city slickers who don't own guns: there were lots  
of em back then, too.
People don't change that much.
In a real emergency we'd do the same thing we did Back In The Day.
We've been taught that the guys Back Then were Stronger Better Tougher and  
to some extent that's true, but put the storybook stuff aside and we're  
pretty much the same.
