back many years ago i know a guy that worked at university of chicago in
the library department. he was researching to find a method to save
books that were being lost due to acid paper. the books were brittle so
there was no chance of taken a photocopy of the book. he came up with a
system that the book was first placed in a vacuum chamber and placed
under a high vacuum for several days a mixture of gases were released
into the vacuum chamber and the pages of the book were basically
plasticized by the process. they were no longer brittle and they could
be photocopied. never heard anything more about it.
