[TheForge] Question on RR steel.

Not too long ago someone was explaining the different pieces found along
RR tracks.  I occasionally find pieces of round stock usually around 8 -
10" 
long and fonged to a square taper on one end.  Taper is about 4" long.
The rod is 1 3/4" in diameter.  I'd like to know what they are and what
they're made of.  My spark testing skills tell me that they're probably
metal.
