Chuck- I've dug your yurt, particularly the 360 degree jib, since seeing pictures of it years back.
Using steel cables in tension is definately a valid construction technique. Look up Shukov's first tension cable structure for the Novgorno Siberian exposition in the late 1890's. He was also going to out-Eiffel Eiffel's tower before Lenin told him 'No more money'.
Building cable bridges the last few years has taught me a little bit of what's possible. We use ALOT of wire rope and bridge strand for any given project and make our own connections using spelter (hot zinc) socketing. We do this quite a bit in the field and it's easier than most people think. It's also much stronger and secure than cable clips or swaged fittings.
My dream shop is a cross between a yurt and the B&O roundhouse in Baltimore. Something with room enough for 40 locomotives, plenty of daylight and 100 ft of headroom.
