Man- that shipping price is an incredible deal!
How many miles is it from Finland to Australia?
9000 miles?
In the USA, to ship a half a container (I am assuming you mean half a
40 footer, or 20 feet x 8 feet x 8 feet, a mere 1000 miles would
easily cost you that much.
My calculations is that at current exchange rates, you are talking
about right around $1000 US. To ship a 20 foot load from my house, in
Washington State, to Washington DC, a mere 2328 miles, would probably
run me twice what they are charging you to ship 4 times the distance.
If it were me, I would be buying iron like crazy in europe, if its
cheaper.

Thanks guys! it really is an exciting project. Just to give you an
idea about the location.. there are government sponsored special deals
for satelite phones because there isnt much mobile phone reception
there!
Frosty..
I am such a miser!! I collect so much scrap I am sure the shed will be
filled in a few weeks! ...most of my tools, Anvils and swage block are
in Finland as I lived there for 18 years. As tempted as I have been
to increase my tool collection whilst here in London... I have
painfully refrained. I saw a great anvil in Devon that i was sorely
tempted to buy.. but there are only so many Queen Elizabeth stamps
that you can stick on a 150kg anvil ;o) Half a container to Australia
from Finland will cost me € 750.. weight not an issue.
It might be a while but as we progress there will be questions.. never
built a forge before! Even the issue of coke vs gas is a area I would
be looking for ideas.. I have forged for years using various forms of
coal and even kerosene but gas is new to me.. sounds cleaner.. dont
know if it is cheaper! Anyway like I said there will be plenty of
questions in the future.
