[TheForge] Coal, propane, or charcoal?

I don't have any sources, but you can sometimes get coke from companies
that test and grade oil/petroleum products. The end result of the
testing process is metallurgical-grade coke. 

Some of them will give it away for free. It might be worth your while to
ask around. I don't have any direct experience with it, just what I was
told at a get together.
