Given what you have said about what you are working with I think some 
kind of welding approach will be best. I'm not so keen on the threaded 
rod but it will probably work. But before you get too worried about the 
whole thing take a look at what Tim Lively does with about 50 lbs of 
mild steel in a bucket of concrete (don't tell the "Guru").

You can't argue with success like that. I have Tim's video and he makes 
knives equal to any with as primitive set up as I've seen. I'd 
recommend the video to any interested knife makers.
