[TheForge] Weld the broken anvil

Jonathon, look on Anvilfire at the article on anvil making. Go to "Pieced
Anvil" and look at the sketch of a Uri Hofi style with two big bars for the
feet. Fabricate the waist with a thick plate an each side. Torch an angle on
the plates top and bottom, jig it up, pre heat to about 350* and tack-weld
the sides but don't remove the spacers and jig until you have it solid or it
will warp. To make it easier you can lay it in its side and use a Jet Rod or
"drag rod" and the weld will be strong and neat. The bars for the feet
should be level when you weld them on.

Is it worth all the time and trouble? Dollar-wise probably not, but you said
you wanted to learn to weld and by the time you finish this project you
will. Also, you will have a functional anvil.

My guess is your anvil was pieced or welded when manufactured. Btw, what
kind of welding equipment do you have? Welding an anvil is like eating an
elephant; one bite at a time.

Subject: Re: [TheForge] Top of a broken anvil?

As to the suggestion of buying a good anvil, I'm working on a very low
budget. I was hoping to make some extra money smithing. I thought if I
could fix this one so that I can use it in a makeshift manner for a bit, I
might make up enough to eventually replace it with something better. So,
buying anything right now is out of the question.

As for the repairs, I'm not sure if I can manage the welding myself. I'm
trying to learn, but I don't have much experience. My Dad can weld, but
he's only a minor repair kind of guy. He's always patched his own farming
gear, but not much else. I've always been told though, that if it was
hardened and tempered that you needed to anneal it before you could weld it
safely. I thought about bolting plates to either side of it, but I don't
think I have enough metal under it to bolt something to. Should I post the
pics to give you guys a better idea?
