Andy:
I'd argue that lead would be the wrong material here.
The object is to provide rebounding mass that will rigidly resist the
hammer's blow and provide the maximum immediate counterforce focusing
the applied energy on the work.
While lead has great mass per unit volume, it don't rebound worth
diddle, just sucks it up and gets a little warmer.
