OK, to be different, I use a leather belt on my lathe, but no stitching to keep it running smooth.  My belt is held together with an adhesive called "Barge Cement" (brand name).   Don't know how it works, but I've only used it once and the belt hasn't come apart in the years (10+?) that it's been on the lathe.
