Hey Bob,
I've been working with all kinds of metal creating wall mounted
sculptures that have neon as back lighting for 20+ years. People have
been calling my Sculptures sconces for years. Neon is called COLD
CATHODE RAY TUBING which is what florescent lights are, as well
as these new energy saving bulbs that are replacing the older
incandescent bulbs.
The old incandescent bulbs can get pretty hot and can transfer that
heat to any thing they come near. If you can get around the
appearance of the new energy saving bulbs, you'll see that they are
warm to the touch but don't get the metal nearly as hot as
incandescent bulbs. Also, a reflective surface on your metal
(either polished or painted white) will reflect more light as a
darker surface will subdue it.........
