[TheForge] How large a generator?

Once I worked on a Winebago for a fella. The ac required 1.5 kW. He had a 1.5 kW generator. However the generator was rated 1.5 kW 220 Vac. He was pulling all 1.5 out of one outlet (full power out of half the windings). The generator ran hot and shut down. It's important to look at the full power and to do some load sharing calculations.
I have a 1.5 kW generator and a 4 kW at the house. Neither like start up power of compressors (heat pump or fridge or freezer). I told the wife on the 1.5, one microwave oven, OR one coffee maker, OR the tv and some lights.
All the Best

One thing to consider is the well pump. I've read stories where 5KW was not enough for the pump's startup current. This could be many times what the HP would indicate. The problem is that the startup current is usually not indicated on the pump. It may have something to do with the well depth.

You can run the numbers by adding up the draw of the appliances you
want to use. I know I added them up for running a few household
appliances simultaneously a while back. Fridge+, etc.. I figured a
5Kw would be good for a small house in an emergency situation. I
don't know what the draw of a shop would run, but a lot more I
imagine. It would make a gas powered welder attractive I think..
